Vestibular Physiotherapy

Vestibular physiotherapy is a specialised area of physiotherapy that focuses on assessing and treating patients with dizziness, vertigo and balance problems related to the vestibular system.

The vestibular system is a sensory system within our inner ears, which is responsible for monitoring the position of our eye and head in space. A disruption of the vestibular system can cause significant dizziness symptoms, vertigo or balance disturbance.

Common vestibular conditions are:

  • Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo (BPPV) – dislodged crystals in the inner ear (otoconia), causing significant dizziness and vertigo with head movement or position changes.

  • Vestibular neuritis – inflammation of the vestibular nerve, usually due to viral infection, causing reduced vestibular function

  • Vestibular Migraine – A specific type of migraine that affects the balance system causing symptoms such as vertigo, dizziness and balance disturbance.

  • Meniere’s disease – Abnormal fluid build-up in the inner ear affecting hearing ability and disrupted balance with dizziness symptoms.

Here at Physio on Chatswood, we conduct comprehensive physical examinations on your vestibular system along with a throughout history taking, to find out the causes of your dizziness/vertigo/balance problem. We also ultilise a high-resolution vestibular goggle to assess your eye movement/nystagmus.

Based on the cause of your dizziness, we will discuss a treatment plan on how to manage your dizziness and create an individualised vestibular rehabilitation program with you.

Vestibular physiotherapy program might involve:

  • Specific repositioning manoeuvre - to reposition the dislodged crystals

  • Vestibular rehabilitation exercises – to improve coordination of our head and eye movements

  • Balance exercises – to optimise stability and reduce risks of falling

If you are suffering from dizziness/vertigo/balance problems, please do not hesitate to call and book in for a vestibular assessment with our vestibular physiotherapist.
